Everything makes a comeback

Twinkies are back!

As girl who grew up with parents who each had a crazy sweet tooth, I know exactly what a Twinkies is. I also know the pain and suffering we all went through while they were off the shelves.

Like a lot of other Americans, I went out and bought a box. (I also bought some of the mini powered donuts!).

Am I the only one that was disappointed?

My husband and I are weird about food. We had tried other versions of the "cream filled sponge cake" and critiqued them and pointed out all their faults.

So the idea that Hostess had been bought and Twinkies were coming back was exciting.

How do Twinkies tie into fan fiction? Easy...

You read an amazing story....you feel like there's more for the author to tell, and then BOOM!

You get the email alert telling you that author has a new story...and its the sequel you've been waiting for.

You get comfy and settle down to start the next chapter of this adventure....

And then you realize, even in one chapter, that's not what as good as you remembered.

In my opinion this is a growing trend in fan fiction. Sequels that just don't live up to their predecessors.

And its not just in fan fiction, but all media. You hear about it in reviews for movies, albums, the next book by a prolific author.

IMHO, Iron Man 3 sucked. It felt like a rip off of a good Iron Man movie. I fear for Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: Rise of the Winter Soldier, and Avengers 2.

Fan fiction sequels are tricky business.

Authors strike gold with a well written, thought provoking story. Maybe they get thousands of reviews, maybe not. But they have enough readers that want more to the characters and story that was created.

Those authors give in or even believe that they have the ability to write it.

More often than not, in my experience, those sequels just do not live up to expectations.

I currently have a story that is now starting its sequel.

It has extremely dark characters and storyline...and already, just in chapter one...it feels like a new Twinkie.

I'm hoping that over the next few updates and new chapters posted, that it will live up to expectations.

Hopefully Twinkies will get better over the next few months too.
